FROM DESIGN TO PRODUCTION ENGINEERING AT THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DENMARK (DTU)

DESIGN. PRODUCTION. LEAN. QUALITY. DATA.

I am Zahid Latif, founder of ZLCOPENHAGEN and a part-time Bachelor of Engineering student in Production Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). My work connects creative product development with the technical understanding of how products are manufactured, checked and improved.

My background is in clothing and product design, with practical experience in materials, pattern construction, sewing, prototypes and manufacturing. Through my engineering studies, I am building on that foundation with production systems, Lean, quality management, supply chain planning and data analysis.

Five words describe the direction of my work: design, production, Lean, quality and data. They connect the original idea with the processes, people and information needed to turn it into a reliable product.

FROM CREATIVE DESIGN TO TECHNICAL PROBLEM-SOLVING

Design taught me to examine materials, construction and the relationship between a product and its user. Production Engineering expands that perspective to the system behind the product: how work is organised, how quality is maintained and how resources are used.

I now look beyond the finished object to understand the steps that produce it. Where can errors occur? What causes delays? How can design decisions make manufacturing easier? These questions connect my creative experience with my developing engineering skills.

PRODUCTION SYSTEMS & LEAN IMPROVEMENT

My studies cover methods for analysing production processes, identifying waste and improving the flow of materials and work. These include Lean, continuous improvement, Just-in-Time (JIT) and the Toyota Production System (TPS).

I am interested in how practical changes to workflows, planning and standardised work can reduce unnecessary effort and support more consistent production. The starting point is understanding the process and the people who work within it.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT & STRUCTURED PROBLEM-SOLVING

Quality depends on both product requirements and the processes used to meet them. My academic work includes quality management, PDCA (Plan–Do–Check–Act) and DMAIC (Define–Measure–Analyse–Improve–Control).

These approaches help structure a problem, examine its causes and assess whether a change has improved performance. I also study Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), with an interest in how documentation, standardised procedures and quality systems support controlled manufacturing.

SUPPLY CHAIN & PRODUCTION PLANNING

Through supply chain management, I study how sourcing, inventory, capacity, production and logistics interact. A decision in one area can affect delivery times, costs and performance elsewhere.

My focus is on understanding these connections and how production planning can balance available resources with customer demand. This also informs my work with manufacturers, where clear requirements and realistic planning matter throughout the production process.

MANUFACTURING CONSULTING IN FAISALABAD & SIALKOT

Through ZLCOPENHAGEN, I work as a consultant, advising manufacturers in Faisalabad and Sialkot, Pakistan, on product development and opportunities to improve production.

I help translate design ideas and Western customer expectations into practical requirements for materials, construction, fit, finishing and quality. My understanding of Danish and Pakistani working cultures helps me explain expectations and discuss solutions with both customers and producers.

This work draws on my practical design background while connecting with the methods I study in Production Engineering. My approach is to understand local production conditions, clarify the intended result and identify improvements that manufacturers can put into practice.

SUSTAINABILITY & LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT

At the Technical University of Denmark, I have worked with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to examine environmental impacts across a product’s life cycle, from materials and manufacturing to use and disposal.

This adds an analytical perspective to my experience with materials and product development. It helps identify which stages contribute most to environmental impact and where changes may have the greatest effect.

My interests include resource efficiency, material choices, circularity and the relationship between product design and responsible manufacturing.

PYTHON, POWER BI & DATA-DRIVEN PRODUCTION

My academic work includes Python, Power BI, machine learning and Industry 4.0. I am developing my ability to organise, analyse and present data so that it can support practical decisions.

In production, this means asking useful questions about performance, variation, quality and resource use. I am interested in making findings understandable and connecting them to specific opportunities for improvement.

CONNECTING PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE WITH ENGINEERING METHODS

My professional direction brings together an understanding of the product and the system that produces it. Design provides practical knowledge of materials, construction and user needs. Engineering adds methods for analysing processes, managing quality and evaluating improvements.

Through my studies and consulting work, I continue to develop this combination across design, production, Lean, quality and data.
