As a participant in the demonstration on January 7, 2024, I felt and still feel a responsibility to speak out about the ceasefire in Gaza and address the horrific killings of civilians. Personally, and likely for many at the demonstration, several of my family members have been killed in this war and over the past 75 years of this ethnic cleansing. Many, including myself, have lost contact with friends and family, and even more have had their homes bombed.<\/p>\n

I reacted to the sign when I saw that it mentioned Palestine and terrorists in the same sentence. Whether it said ‘Free Palestine from Hamas’ or ‘Palestine = terrorists,’ the feeling of being disrupted in our grief with an unnecessary political agenda was the last straw for me. Jaleh Tavakkoli is entitled to her opinion, but she should have respect and understanding that at the demonstration, we are there to focus solely on stopping the killings of children in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Was it the right thing to do? With the grief and frustration I carry, it felt like the right reaction in that moment. However, considering the significance given to it by politicians and the media coverage, I could have asked the security to handle it.<\/p>\n

In the video, you see me being pulled and torn from both sides, by the woman and her husband, and also by the cameraman. I don’t harm or threaten anyone; I simply take the sign and tear it apart. The reason for my reaction is the deep frustration and powerlessness I feel because we can’t help the civilians in Palestine. In that moment, I’m in deep sorrow, and seeing the woman with the sign makes me feel that she is completely indifferent to all the dead children and the terrible destruction my family has gone through. I feel like she’s ‘rubbing salt in the wound.’<\/p>\n

Not only are our families and everyone else’s in Gaza being murdered and bombed, but we can’t even have peace and quiet in Denmark at a legal demonstration to mourn our lost family members and loved ones<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Even in our grief, as I perceive it, we are subjected to harassment. She lacked awareness that it was our way of mourning and expressing our emotions to the Palestinian population; it wasn’t the time to discuss or be disturbed, but we just needed peace and respect to be there for our families.<\/p>\n

As a pediatric nurse, it cuts deep into my heart to see children blown apart or in terrible situations where you can’t help them.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It cuts deep into my soul that afterward, I am portrayed as a terrorist and assailant by many Danish and foreign media and politicians. Instead, you should have put yourselves in my shoes and thought that many of us have lost our closest family members and are in a situation where we simply needed to be in the moment without disturbances. Because it was an unnecessary disturbance that came, and the focus was taken away from the purpose of our gathering.<\/p>\n

What makes me think a lot is also that when many of our politicians (Morten Dahlin<\/a>, among others) speak about me as a person and refer to me as a terrorist, unwelcome, and unable to embrace Danish values, based on a 30-second clip. It creates an unnuanced image of me as a person and of many at the demonstration.<\/p>\n

Many politicians occasionally visit these pediatric wards in Denmark where I work. How will you as ministers and politicians handle it when you have to shake my hand and thank me for my good work as a pediatric nurse, which I have experienced several times, now that you are portraying me this way?<\/p>\n

What about the counter-demonstrator and all her followers who write nasty things about me and share the video with everyone, exposing and violating my privacy. What will you do when one day you come to the pediatric reception with your children or acquaintances and need me to provide good nursing care? How will you see me then? Am I still a terrorist, unwelcome, and unassimilated?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n
