BRIDGING TWO WORLDS?

CAN YOU BE OF TWO CULTURES?

A DANISH-PUNJABI’S JOURNEY

First of all…If you are looking for a professional store with mass-produced garments, and perfection in everything. Please don’t continue on this site. I will suggest you find another well-established brand. This webshop is far from a perfect shop.

Hello, I’m Zahid, the founder of ZLCOPENHAGEN. I am the person behind this brand, a person born in Aabenraa, in Denmark. Originally I’m from Pakistan, and now I guess you are wondering. How on earth can you be born in Denmark and the same time be from Pakistan?

IT STARTED WITH A COW

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. My dad took a bus to Denmark, and in a quirky twist of fate, he married my mom over the phone. Her arrival marked the beginning of my journey, shaped by the collision of these two distinct worlds. Come along as we explore the colorful layers of my cultural adventure, a celebration of the beauty that unfolds when different worlds blend in harmony.

My name, means “self-denying” in Arabic, blending calm Danish vibes with lively Punjabi spirit. Let’s dive into my story, where Scandinavia meets Punjab. Our logo, a square word “Zahid” made from Arabic letters, is like a snapshot of my mixed identity. It’s the visual tale of how Danish simplicity and Punjabi vibrancy come together in my life.

WOVEN TOGETHER: THE FABRIC OF MY HERITAGE

TRADITIONS TORN, BORDERS BOLSTERED

My journey begins in the heart of Punjab, a land whose spirit flows through both Pakistan and India. This province, rich in history and culture, has been a cradle for a shared heritage that transcends modern borders. Despite political lines, we find unity in our language, cuisine, and traditions—a testament to a shared identity that predates division.

A TAPESTRY OF SHARED CULTURE

Punjab’s story is one of vibrant colors, lively festivals, and an enduring legacy of craftsmanship that speaks to both sides of the border. Our language, Punjabi, serves as a melody that resonates with millions, creating a bond that political boundaries cannot sever. The culinary traditions of Punjab, famed for their rich flavors and hearty dishes, are celebrated in every household, from Lahore to Amritsar, bringing people together in a shared love for food.

While religion may delineate us on the map, our cultural roots run deep, intertwining us in ways that go beyond the superficial divides. It’s this synthesis of culture and tradition that I bring to ZLCOPENHAGEN. Our brand is not just a fashion statement; it’s a celebration of unity in diversity, honoring the rich tapestry of human connection that Punjab embodies.

WELCOME TO ZLCOPENHAGEN

At ZLCOPENHAGEN, we draw inspiration from the collective heritage of Punjab, incorporating traditional motifs and sustainable practices into our designs. This fusion reflects a broader vision of fashion—one that respects our shared past and looks forward to a united future.

FROM AABENRAA TO SHEIKHUPURA: A JOURNEY OF CULTURAL DISCOVERY

Growing up in Aabenraa, Denmark, I was surrounded by the beauty of Scandinavian culture. However, life took a fascinating turn when my family and I spent a year and a half in Sheikhupura, Pakistan. This experience left an indelible mark on me as I immersed myself in a culture vastly different from my own.

In Sheikhupura, every moment was a new discovery. From the bustling markets filled with vibrant colors and aromatic spices to the warmth of the people who welcomed us with open arms, I was captivated by the richness of Pakistani culture.

BEAUTY OF DIVERSITY

Despite the language barrier and cultural differences, I found myself embracing the traditions and customs of Sheikhupura, learning valuable lessons about resilience, community, and the beauty of diversity.

This experience ignited a passion within me to bridge the gap between cultures and celebrate the unique identities that make our world so beautifully diverse. Today, as I navigate the intersection of my Danish upbringing and my time in Pakistan, I draw inspiration from both worlds, infusing my designs with the spirit of unity and inclusivity.

CROSS CULTURAL

As a designer standing at the crossroads of Danish Design by minimalism and Punjabi vibrancy, my journey has been one of discovery, learning, and celebration. Each stitch and seam in ZLCOPENHAGEN’s collection carries echoes of these rich traditions, blending them into a tapestry that speaks not just to fashion, but to a deeper, global connection. This fusion of cultures has opened my eyes to the importance of sustainability, ethical practices, and the preservation of our shared heritage. To delve deeper into the sustainable practices that guide our designs, I encourage you to explore the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, an invaluable resource for understanding the impact and improvement of our industry’s environmental footprint. For those drawn to the stories behind traditional crafts and the preservation of intangible heritage, UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list offers a window into the world’s cultural diversity, including the intricate weaves of Danish and Punjabi craftsmanship.

Embracing ethical fashion is more than a personal choice; it’s a global movement towards more transparent, responsible industry standards, as championed by Fashion Revolution. Their insights into creating a more ethical fashion landscape resonate deeply with our mission at ZLCOPENHAGEN. And for a broader perspective on how sustainable living and eco-conscious choices can be seamlessly integrated into our lives, The Good Trade provides a wealth of information and inspiration. These resources have shaped my understanding and approach to design, emphasizing that true beauty in fashion comes from harmony with our environment and respect for all cultures.

TWISTED SUITS

Introducing my groundbreaking creation from the Danish Design School project: the Reversible Innovation Jacket. It redefined menswear by blending classic lines with modern design. I merged traditional suit fabrics with high-performance sports materials. This not only improved comfort but also added functionality.

What made this jacket unique was its reversible feature. With a simple flip, it transformed from classic to sporty, suitable for any occasion.

Craftsmanship was key. Every stitch reflected my dedication to pushing boundaries and reshaping fashion norms. Designed in Copenhagen, the collection came to life thanks to skilled tailors at Dandy Design in Lahore, Pakistan, in 2008. It was a proud moment, seeing my vision become reality.

The Reversible Innovation Jacket is more than just clothing. It embodies the fusion of my creative vision with the craftsmanship of skilled tailors in Lahore, Pakistan, and the design sophistication of Copenhagen. Each stitch tells a story, blending the heritage of both worlds into a wearable masterpiece that speaks to individuality and innovation.

CREATION OF MY BRAND

Debuting My Brand’s First Collection

In my first underwear collection, showcased in this video, I tell the story of two enchanting characters: Patrick, a window cleaner, and Rannva, a captivating woman. Set in the historic streets of Copenhagen’s Magstræde, their chance encounter sparks a whirlwind romance amidst the charm of cobblestone pathways and ancient buildings.

As Patrick diligently tends to his work, Rannva’s radiant smile catches his eye, drawing them together in a moment of undeniable connection. In a daring move, Rannva unveils Patrick’s sculpted physique beneath his work attire, igniting a passion that echoes the timeless allure of their surroundings.

Their love, immortalized in the fabric of Patrick’s underwear, symbolizes the enduring magic of their encounter amidst Copenhagen’s ancient streets. This tale of love and destiny unfolds against the backdrop of cobblestones and sunlight, capturing the essence of romance in the heart of the city.

Through this collection and video, I invite you to join Patrick and Rannva on their journey of love and connection, where every stitch tells a story of enchantment and allure.
